Q.        My parents died without having had the opportunity to perform their Hajj. I am their only daughter should I perform Hajj for them?

A.        It is conditional for any one who performs the pilgrimage on behalf of some one else to have performed his own pilgrimage. An instance of this sort occurred during the time of the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam. Ibn 'Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, heard a pilgrim assuming Ihraam for pilgrimage on behalf of a man called Shubrumah.  The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, asked the man “Have you performed your own pilgrimage before?  He said, “No”, the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, told him “Do yours first, and Shubrumah’s later."

Allaah Knows best.

Q.        Unfortunately we know of so many people who earn their money by illegitimate means either dealing with interest or selling alcohol or pork etc… and when the time comes they go to Hajj. Will it be accepted from them?

A.        All expenses involved in pilgrimage should have been earned by legitimate enterprises and lawful means as goodness is a quality of Allaah Who accepts nothing but good and pure.  Pilgrims should perform this act for the sake of Allaah alone and not for their own ends or for hypocrisy and show off, which are incompatible with the sincerity of worship.

Allaah Knows best.

Q.        We would like to go to Hajj and must take our children with us, will it be accepted from them?

A.        The pilgrimage performed by a minor is acceptable, but it doesn’t exempt him/her from rendering homage to the Creator under the fifth pillar of Islam when he is grown.  Ibn 'Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “Pilgrimage preformed by a child should be performed again when he becomes an adult of sensible age…” it is not advisable to take children to throw pebbles at peak time, their guardian should throw pebbles on their behalf. Allaah Knows best.
